Memories in the Making is an Alzheimer’s Association art therapy program for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Volunteer facilitators help people with dementia – many of whom often have no art background – create drawings and paintings. These sessions provide participants social interaction and boost their self-esteem while opening the channels of communication with loved ones.

Today’s featured Memories in the Making artist is Jerry. Jerry was born in Darby Pennsylvania, and spent many years in his career as a design draftsman. He has always had a great sense of humor, and loves reading history, challenging himself with crossword puzzles, and spending time in his garden. Jerry is an avid lover of music, and can’t resist the urge to dance when he hears a good tune. Jerry is a wonderful addition to the MIM program at Live Oak, and continues to develop his skills in watercolor.

Jerry’s painting is just one of the many works of art that will be auctioned off at our annual Memories in the Making Art & Wine Auction, held this year on March 1 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. In addition to work by Memories in the Making artists, the silent and live auction selection will include fine wines, unique experiences and luxury items.

I’m an artist and have just begun art activities with dementia patients in a small nursing home. I would love to know how Radiant Mandala by Jerry was created. What was the prompt? What other projects have been successful (by that I mean getting a person to use the offered materials in a creative way)? Is there a good source for other art activities? I would love to see the elderly people I am getting to know have pleasure from art as I do.
